get into it, the one who made the most headlines on this, not john mccain. the idea that every sunday talk show feels that they have to book john mccain every sunday is -- i am so sick of it. common. you know he will say something crazy but he is crazy. why keep booking him. >> for sure. >> so didn't make any news yesterday. the one who did was colin powell. first of all, who former secretary of state, former chairman of the joint chiefs who said that -- he came out very, very strongly in defense of senator haggel. >> people say that doesn't necessarily make him a good candidate for secretary of defense. i will tell you who thinks that makes him a good candidate for secretary of defense, the men and women in the armed forces of the united states and their parents. >> meaning, of course he will be the first enlisted man to serve as secretary of defense. and one of the few wounded in wartime and in combat to the serve as secretary of defense. then where colin powell really made news was when he we want on to say, this whole battle over chuck ha

" yesterday and the white house see some opposition of graham an potentially john mccain as being sort of a grudge for chuck hagel's turning against the iraq war in the second term of the bush administration. hagel supported the war and then soured on it as the years went on as a lot of americans did and i just want to share with you, carol, comments i got from this administration official talking about graham. it's one thing to posture on a talk show. it's another thing to look a two-term senator in the eye and say i'm voting against you because you turned against the war in iraq. this official also described the nomination of hagel as a vote where a president gets his guy so they don't see this nomination as being so controversial, so white hot and provocative that the president doesn't get a -- get his person confirmed by the senate. obviously, there have been nominees to secretary of defense in the past who did become major problems like john tower with personal issues that derailed his nomination as secretary of defense in the reagan administration. but one other thing i wanted to
immigration reform that provides a pathway for citizenship. i saw john mccain yesterday on face the nation and i can tell you that we were in the room together, he's working with some eight senators, he believes that we're on the path to get comprehensive immigration reform and i think that both parties would be -- would do well by the american people if they did that and i think that's the difference. an election has a way of making a statement, and i think it did, particularly for the republicans who, as you know, were calling for the south deportation of 11 million people. >> a lot of republicans out there say they won't vote for anything that smacks as what they call amnesty. the proposal that you're going to unveil today, the proposal that the president will supposedly unveil in the next few weeks is not amnesty. >> it's earned, you have to pay your back taxes, you have to show that you've been in the country working for a period of time. you had to show that you have a background check so you haven't broken any serious laws, you have to learn english and the like. it's earned, it not
the nomination of former senator chuck hagel for secretary of defense. today, republican senator john mccain promised a grilling on hagel's record against a troop surge in iraq. >> when he really believes that the surge was the worst blunder since the vietnam war, that clearly is not -- that's not correct. i mean, in fact, it's bizarre. >> hagel has also faced fire for supporting negotiations with iran, still widely believed to be on the path of making nuclear weapons. today, former secretary of state collin powell vigorously defended hagel. >> what chuck hagel has said is that nothing is ever off the table, but he is one who believes in the prospects for negotiation. we have been ready to negotiate under the right set of circumstances with iran for the last several years, with our friends and allies. >> meantime, hagel says his remarks on israel, iran and gays in the military have been distorted. confirmation hearings could start as early as this week. >>> the family of aaron swartz, a young internet pioneer who relatives say committed suicide yesterday say the government is partly to blame
opponent among the republican party against the iraq surge in 2007 and split with john mccain, a former mentor of his, and sewed a lot, a lot, a lot of animosity between himself and his party. and when he voted for barack obama, it was sort of no surprise among the republicans thing. he doesn't have the goodwill in the republican conference of the united states senate that another similarly situated republican might. >> megyn: he called the successful iraq troop surge the most dangerous blunder in this country other than vietnam. obviously that turned out not to be the case. and on the topic of israel, you can't get away with inartfully phrased for hagel on this, can you, chris? not only he called it the jewish lobby, one of the two senators voted for renewal of libyan act and voted against designating the iranian revolutionary guard a terrorist organization and blamed for blocking a bill that democrats supported. so, it's his -- his stance with respect to israel has been sort of neutrality at best, but that doesn't seem to be an acceptable stance for even, you know, some democratic sen
of defense, the independent streak. interesting to watch john mccain. mccain part of the group of -- who embraced hagel. vietnam vets together they used to pal around with john kerry and max cleland and chuck rob, vietnam senators but differed in the past few years and there's tension there. mccain's the key person. for brennan, brennan has a weak spot he was pro-cia, waterboarding type of activities, mccain was opposed to that. mccain's in the spotlight the next week. >> talk about women. we've had three major appointments so far, three major suggestions at the moment. kerry, brennan and hagel. we know the treasury secretary's leaving. we haven't had somebody named but there are not a lot of women's names floating around, as potentials. why no more women in the cabinet? >> well, we're just losing two high-profile women in the obama administration, hillary clinton, but also lisa jackson at epa. it is -- seems to me the president's going to want to try to get in his last remaining appointments some women in play. susan rice can stay in at u.n. but you want to get a few more. you might see
to terrorism cases. john mccain said of nomination, quote, i have many questions and concerns about the nomination especially what role he played in the so-called enhanced interrogation programs. i plan to examine this aspect of mr. brennan's record very closely. while denouncing waterboarding as un-american in a 2007 interview, brennan told cbs news the program was valuable. quote, there has been a lot of information that has come out of these interrogation procedures that the agency has in fact used against real hardcore terrorists t has saved lives. aside from what critics describe as significant inconsistencies in his public states they also question whether brennan can recast himself as neutral after four years inside the white house. jenna. jenna: that's interesting. any reaction now from the white house? are they telegraphing how they might defend brennan against some of these criticisms?. >> reporter: well, this week the white house emphasizing that brennan in a letter for years ago denounced the cia program. since he earned trust from the president as his counterterrorism a
as john mccain, no one would even be talking about the comments. i think it's a side show. one of the most important jewish leaders used the same phrase, jewish lobby, just last december. i think it would be more accurate to call it the right wing pro-israel lobby. but many of the pro israel lobby are jewish, as is myself. one of the groups is the american jewish committee to suggest this is in any way anti semitic, when many jews, including a rabbi from omaha, has testified to his good relationship with jews. >> peter br er biner, thank you joining us. thanks very much. >> 17 minutes past the hour. >>> time for a quick check of the top stories. bcs championship. it wasn't a game. it was a shame for notre dame and its legion of fans. alabama crimson tide rolled over the irish, 42-14 to win the national championship. alabama's third bcs title in the last four years, looking every bit like a college football dynasty now. >>> george h.w. bush continues his recovery at a houston hospital. according to a statement released by his office, the 88-year-old former president has been busy watching f
manchin, west virginia, and john mccain were on the cbs show over the weekend. here's what they have to say about it. >> how we got into a culture of mass violence. if you're just going to say it's all about guns and we need gun changes and bans, you're wrong. >> we need -- >> we need a comprehensive approach. >> do you think an assault weapons ban can pass the congress? >> no. >> do you think it should? >> no. >>steve: it's interesting, harry reid said over the weekend -- in the past harry reid voted against assault weapons bans. harry reid doesn't know whether or not it would pass congress either. he thinks it might get through the senate but it would probably not pass in the house. the other thing is joe biden and his commission are going to come up with their findings. tomorrow they're going to release it. the last time we had the debt commission findings, did the administration pay attention to that? no. >> i think the commission knows what the findings are already. >>gretchen: joe biden heads this committee versus the other committee which was not the vice president. >> it's go
like john mccain, and the idea is you have to continue to invest in a country because we invested all this blood and treasure for all of these years, and it would be wasted. that was the logic of vietnam as well. you can sustain trying to build a nation that many empires have tried and failed before to do so. it's not about karzai anymore. it's not actually about al qaeda. it's not really even about the taliban. it's about pride. it's about the mistakes that have been made and the lives that have been lost. how do you best honor that? >> yeah. >> gail, stay with us, if you can. >>> up next, a preview of "meet the press" with david gregory and "the washington post's" eugene robinson. first bill karins with a check on the forecast. >> we're having our father/son powwow. barnicle is going to control the weather maps. we're going to do the rooerever. >> i'm a high-pressure area. >> yes, you are, hothead. you have to go a little slower. we're confusing people. now we're on saturday already. let's just start with your weekend forecast. you can't go back. that's the problem. foreca as far as
